If you are a homeowner whose house is heated by a boiler, you likely know that you are going to need to take steps to address boiler maintenance during the winter because you are relying on it to make your house comfortable. During the summer, you might be tempted to entirely forget about your boiler and worry instead about your air conditioner. However, you can save a lot of money if you take steps to maintain your boiler during the summer as well as during the winter. Here are some tips.

1. Set Your Boiler's Temperature Lower

The first thing that you want to do when the weather starts to get warm is to use the heating controls on your boiler to dictate that you are okay with keeping a lower temperature in your home. This will effectively limit how many times your boiler will kick on in order to ensure that you don't have to pay higher bills. For example, if you have your boiler set to kick on if the temperature in your home drops below 68 degrees and you have an unusually cool night where the temperature drops to 50 degrees outside, you don't necessarily want your boiler to kick on because it will likely be warm the next day. Setting your boiler's heat controls to not kick on for anything above 50 degrees or whatever you think is comfortable will keep your boiler from kicking on unnecessarily during the summer.

2. Upgrade During the Summer

If you need to upgrade your boiler so that it converts fuel into heat more efficiently, you will absolutely want to schedule this maintenance during the summer. This is because many boiler specialists are less busy during the summer since most people are not using their boilers and running into problems. This might translate to lower prices for you since it won't be a peak time. Take advantage of the times when you are not using your boiler to actually make the changes you need to run your boiler more cheaply during the winter.

3. Turn On Your Boiler Once in a While

Every so often during the summer, turn your boiler on in order to ensure that the moving parts don't get stuck to one another or seize up. This will allow you to transition smoothly to using your boiler during the winter and help you avoid any issues.
